Breitling Re-releases Miles Davis’s Navitimer
A reboot of a jazz icon in keeping with its time.
To commemorate Miles Davis’s decades-long wearing of Navitimer watches, Breitling has released the Navitimer B09 Chronograph 41 Miles Davis watch, modeled after the ref. 806 Mk5 favored by the pioneering jazz musician.
Breitling positions this watch as a tribute to a distinguished musician, but its appeal likely extends far beyond Miles Davis fans. The watch boasts an elegant design, devoid of obvious Davis elements; the only clue is the subtle engraving on the case back.
This Miles Davis special edition follows the pattern of Breitling’s highly popular Navitimer ref. 806 reissue and the subsequent Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute, and should be particularly appealing to collectors who missed these versions or simply dislike the 24-hour format of the Cosmonaute.
The return of the Air Racer bracelet to this timepiece is a pleasant surprise, as Miles Davis typically opted for a black leather strap with his Navitimer watches. This design may not appeal to everyone, but I appreciate Breitling’s willingness to experiment with such avant-garde bracelet designs, much like Zenith’s retro-style trapezoidal bracelet in the El Primero collection.
A successful reissue. The Miles Davis Special Edition watch features a 41mm case, identical in size to the original 806, perfectly complementing the Navitimer’s expressive dial. Compared to previous 806 reissues, this watch brings back the beloved “twin-engine” logo and the reverse panda sub-dial.
The Mk5 model’s dial abandons the Navitimer’s iconic numerals and hands, replacing them with bar hour markers (one numeral remains at 12 o’clock) and hands coated with a cream-colored Super-Luminova luminescent material. I’m not usually a fan of the so-called “antique” effect, but in this case, it adds a subtle warmth to the otherwise plain dial.
As for other differences from the original Navitimer, the sliding rule bezel features a black and white color scheme, omitting the red accents on the vintage original. Aside from this minor change, it remains a very faithful replica of the Mk5 dial. Shopping fake watches
The famous Air Racer bracelet has also been revived. Originally introduced in the 1960s and closely associated with the musician Serge Gainsbourg, this bracelet possesses a unique sense of style. Its cuff design is quite different from the integrated bracelets commonly seen today, giving this classic design a fresh vitality. In re-introducing the Air Racer bracelet, Breitling improved wearing comfort by refining the hinge links near the clasp. Like the previous 806 reissue, the Miles Davis watch is powered by the B09 movement, a manual-winding version of Breitling’s flagship chronograph movement. This function is identical to the original and helps keep the overall thickness to 13mm. The B09 movement offers a 70-hour power reserve and, like all Breitling movements, is chronometer-certified.
In addition to the limited edition of 500 stainless steel pieces, 50 sets of three watches will also be available. These three watches are identical in design but are made of stainless steel, 18K yellow gold, and platinum, respectively. The stainless steel and yellow gold models feature a black and white “reverse panda” dial design, while the platinum model features a blue dial with white subdials.
