Ulysse Nardin’s DIVER NET Concept watch fights ocean plastic pollution

From the ocean to the wrist, the UN’s commitment is to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

The connection between replica Ulysse Nardin and the sea has always been valued. For decades, the brand has been a well-known manufacturer of marine timers and timing instruments for marine explorers. As the official timekeeper of the 9th VendéeGlobe competition, the brand upholds this tradition and conducts uninterrupted and effortless yacht racing around the world. But this is not all… Ulysse Nardin also wants to make our planet better and cleaner. In this case, the brand focused its work on research and development of solutions to solve the growing crisis of plastic pollution in the ocean, thus creating DIVER NET, a concept made from recyclable fishing nets Watch.

For decades, the ocean has been part of the DNA of Ulysse Nardin. Therefore, the brand should be attributed to Dayang, “The employees have a strong will and interest to support initiatives aimed at improving the environmental performance of the brand. Our intention is not to be the first company to use sustainable materials to innovate, but to The industry has shown that it is possible to make our customers aware of recycled materials even in luxury goods,” said Patrick Pruniaux, CEO of Ulysse Nardin.

Therefore, Ulysse Nardin cooperated with three young French designers who created the first fishing net recycling department in France under the name of FIL&FAB. The start-up company recycles unused nets from ports and converts them into polyamide pellets, a material with high friction resistance. This is the first initiative of the United Nations to launch a new “R-STRAP” made from recycled fishing nets, which are one of the main sources of ocean plastic pollution. Now, the brand has pushed this idea further because the entire case/strap is made of environmentally friendly materials, a concept that has been adopted by Gyre swiss luxury watches and Alpina.

The result is a watch called DIVER NET based on the existing Diver X 44mm model. If the appearance, shape and overall mechanical basis are the same, the new model (currently a concept watch) will replace most materials with environmentally friendly, low-impact solutions. The bottom shell and bottom cover are made of materials that were previously part of the fishing net. Similarly, the bezel and its inserts (usually displayed on a 60-minute scale) are also made of recycled PET. There are some green elements around the watch, such as crown protection, bezel index and strap pins-the strap is of course also made of recyclable fishing nets.

In order to reduce the environmental impact, Ulysse Nardin DIVER NET also replaced its sapphire crystal with a new material called transparent ceramic glass. This special glass is processed in the Swiss canton of Jura and requires less resources than produced sapphires. The United Nations Innovation Department turns all these solutions into reality, and DIVER NET tests these materials there, and may expand to other common products in the future.

The dial of this conceptual model is bold, the light gray color is inspired by the acid green technique, and has a combination of X and UN letters. On the other hand, the display is still the display of a traditional marine chronometer, with the central minutes and hours, with a few seconds at 6 o’clock, and a power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock. The date is also included. This concept watch is powered by the brand’s internal automatic movement UN-118, has a 60-hour power reserve and the iconic Silicon & Diamonsil technology escapement. It can be seen through the back of the display.

Ulysse Nardin DIVER NET is a concept watch that will not be sold, so…the applied technology may be used in commercial luxury swiss watches in the near future because the brand believes that recycled materials are necessary. In the future, no measures should be considered too small.
